Two Households...

Casa di Giulietta

"Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean."

~From Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet~

I love Shakespeare, I always have, and this is one of my favorite plays. Who doesn’t know about the love story between Juliet and Romeo? Immortalized by Shakespeare in the first line of his play? Verona Italy holds the claim to having the houses of perhaps the greatest lovers in history--Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague, the most famous star-crossed lovers of all time.

Thousands of tourists come to Verona to see the Casa di Giulietta, or Juliet’s House.

From the courtyard, you can see Juliet’s Balcony. This is supposedly the very same balcony where the tragic heroine cried out to her Romeo. These days, do not be surprised to see many a young girl standing on the balcony, probably dreaming her own dreams, as I did while I was there.

Perhaps the highlight would be the bronze statue of Juliet in the courtyard. Though its origins cannot be determined, the most popular thing to do when visiting the statue is to rub its right breast, which will bring good luck. So don’t be surprised if the right side of the bronze Juliet seems to be shinier than the rest of her! Also found there are numerous graffiti and stick notes on the walls and doors in the courtyard.

During my senior year of college, I had the good fortune to visit Verona. I was completely fascinated and awestruck as I had just completed a course in Shakespearean History. So with this little tidbit of information in mind, I can share that I have a truly juicy new romance story on the rise, and Verona Italy is my setting.

Memories are great at sparking ideas for stories. And my memories of Verona are very special to me. How about you? Do you have a special place you've visited that would make a wonderful setting for your next romance?

Hi Kaye, I build stories around places I've visited all the time. Case in point, Seduced in Seoul, LOL. I have one set in Paris, the perfect romantic city. Verona sounds amazing. I've been to Rome and Pisa; both would make wonderful romantic settings.

Hi Helen, Yes, I remember you saying that about SIS. And Paris is a perfect romantic city too. I love visiting places for story-building. But many writers can’t do that, so I think research is the next best thing to do. It’s a forgone conclusion I can’t visit another planet for my sci-fi stories, LOL! Still, visiting different places (and memories of those visits) can often spur the creativity, that’s for sure. For me, incurable romantic that I am, Verona is perfect for this particular romance I am now writing. Good luck with your Paris story!

This is such a romantic idea, Kaye! I've never visited any city in Europe. But Italy is on my future list of places to go. Rome being at the top.

I visited Italy once. Never did make it to Verona. The closest I get to visiting an area for a story is watching Star Trek!

Your story sounds good. Can't wait to read it.

My wip is set in Wales (which I have visited a few times) but that's because of the plot - can't be anywhere else. Usually I have to slot in the location around my characters so they're not flapping about in a void! (although possibly that might work in a sci fi!!!)

Sounds gorgeous - have always wanted to visit Verona. Love Romeo & Juliet (from school productins with shaky scenery to Baz Luhrmann's version where Leo and Claire fell in love gazing through the fish tank with that wonderful score ... sigh!)

Christina, Wales sounds wonderful!

Linda, I can't wait to finish writing it!

Dianne and Johnny-- thanks.

Your visit to Verona sounds wonderful. I've never been, but love Sorrento and in my last book, the couple actually met and fell in love there. Such incredible views of Versuvius, palm trees and sea.

I also love the beach down the hill from where I live as it's wild and windswept most of the time.

Hi Kaye,
I built my upcoming novel, Passion In Paradise, starting on an exotic resort on the Whitsunday Coast, then the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea Australia.
I use to do a lot of diving up that way, and I love the Whitsunday Islands. So hot, exotic and to die for. heehehhe
I love reading your blog... and Shakespere has always been one of my favourites as well. I have the collection (actually antique) Every so often I'll pick one up and re-read it. :)
I am also writing a novel set in the Outback of Australia, hot, red dust country.

Suzanne :)

Debs, you live close to a wild windswept sea? Be still my heart! I love the coast. I live inland now, but love to get the coast whenever I can.

Suzanne, Passion in Paradise sounds wonderful. And your new novel in a hot red dusty country sounds oh, so tempting.

I am such a romantic too.
